VICTUALS
...Weekly Newsletter of Sweet FellowshipEncountering Jesus [Issue 3 Volume 6]
And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: ...their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners... and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not, from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.[Luke 5:6-11]
Are you someone who has been grappling with sin on a daily basis? you have tried several times to break free, but it looks impossible. Deliverance sessions have been conducted on you, several prayers have been offered, you may have even attended categories of crusades with different great men of God ministering, yet, the hidden sins in your heart, your misbehaviours and your wild character traits are not resolved. You eat sin like food and drink iniquity like water. Your problem per chance may be the lust of the eyes, fornication, lies, boiling anger or maliciousness. Some people may counsel that you need some great deliverance, but all those deliverance sessions have never helped you. Your real problem, is that you have never SEEN Jesus who saves you do not yet know Christ. You may have a name or title in church, and may be very zealous in the things of God, but, your singular need to be totally free, is a clear revelation of Jesus. You need to SEE HIM. Show a man the revelation of Christ, immediately, you will find a man who will be permanently delivered from all wrongs. Simon Peter, in the passage above, gloriously encountered Jesus, and was permanently delivered. How did it happen?
”When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying Depart from me...“
I am wondering, why the Bible used the expression: "Peter saw it". Peter was neck deep involved in these occurrences. He was the one that got the instructions from Jesus. He was the one who arose and cast his net to the sea, it was his boat that was used, and he was not a spectator by the seashore. If Peter was just an onlooker, it was proper for the Bible to have said: "when the spectator saw it". But for Peter, it was not just a sight of looking, he was involved in it.
It then means that this seeing of Peter, was not just a look of the eyes, it was not a casual observation, it was not a matter of the eyes. It was more of the heart than of the eyes. It was actually a revelation of The Lord upon his inner man. We even discovered that this revelation was what broke Peter down, brought repentance to him, and revealed how vague and unclean he was. Whatever Peter eventually became for God, began with this singular, all-consuming revelation.
Naturally, when miracles happen, it brings joy, laughter, testimonies and praises on mens lips. When miracles happen, needs are met, and the recipient goes home with his bundles of divine provisions. But here, none of these could define Peters experience:
• Peter had a miracle, but it brought sorrow and sober reflection to his heart. As he "saw" the miracle, he saw the greatness and holiness of the Lord, then, he saw his wretchedness and sinfulness. The miracle did not give him ecstasy and joy like it did to the other men around, instead, It gave him self realisation and broke him down.
It was not the miracle which he saw that gave him this inward look, it was something richer than that. It was the revelation of who Jesus was.
• Peter had a miracle of heavy provision. But how can a man be mightily provided for, and he will abandon the provision for which he eagerly sought? How can someone so desire and pray for a need in his life, maybe for breakthroughs, provision of a child, a spouse, employment, riches, scholarship or admission, go for several crusades and meetings for months, and when the miracle was eventually done by God, he abandons that provision immediately?
When you see a man who abandons his miracle for something unusual, that man SAW something. That man got something from the Lord much more bigger and greater than meets the eye. Something deeper must have happened to his heart that ordinary physical provisions cannot be compared with. What he saw and took home, unseen to men, is by far greater than what he appeared to abandon.
This was what happened to Peter. He "saw" the revelation of The Lord. He entered into another realm of the spiritual, where physical things like goods, money, fishes and possessions hold no weight in his life again. It was a realm where spiritual things value more than the physical. A realm where he would rather sacrifice the physical (no matter how bogus it appears to the ordinary eye), just to catch a glimpse of the spiritual which had now become of more value to him.
• When Peter saw the glory of God, he saw the futility and vanity of the world.
• When Peter saw the holiness of the Lord, he saw the dirtiness of his nature.
• When Peter saw the greatness of God, everything here below (including fishing, fame and bigness, even his family attachment) became insignificant, and he would rather lose all just to gain Christ.
Whenever men are still so tied to things and to physical goods, they may have some miracles, but such earthly attachment is an indication that they have not seen this deep revelation that Peter saw. Are you still so attached to the world and its goods? Even though you have heard much about worldliness and you desire to be free from its hold, yet you are not delivered? There is a divine work that God needs to do in your heart, a revelation of Gods glory that must come upon your spirit. God needs to show you the emptiness of the world system, and the glory of Jesus and heaven before you can ACTUALLY be free.
”...he fell down...”
What Peter saw was so heavy for him. His body frame and chemistry could not sustain the weight of the glory that he saw. He crumbled under the weight of divine glory, he could not carry it, and he could not bear it. With all his charisma, knowledge and age, this revelation was by far greater than him. Our age in church, our years in ministry are insignificant when it comes to the issue of glory. Your age, knowledge, zeal and church commitment may permit some ungodly behaviour and promote pride in you, but when you see the revelation of Gods glory, it deals particularly with you from within and shows you who you really are.
God does not release deep things unto us based on our physical age or religious zeal, no, he looks at our hearts. If I am hungry for God, God will have mercy upon me, but if I am hungry for goods, then God does not waste His precious pearls, He never casts holy things unto dogs.
”...he fell down...”
I found out that most Bible versions used the phrase "he fell down"rather than "he bowed down".Meaning that, it was the weight of glory that humbled him. It was not just a kind of reverence that Gods glory deserves that Peter was giving to Jesus. It was not just a matter of mere worship or the acknowledging of Jesus as the Holy One. No, this one dealt with him, it crushed him, it broke him to pieces, he could not stand, it shattered his ego, and he cried out,"Lord depart from me..."
”...Master leave, I am a sinner and cannot handle this holiness...”(MSG)
Whoa! It looks as if one of the major things that the glory of God addresses in the life of any man in whom it is revealed, is the sinful state of that life. This is not just talking about the sins committed, but the very nature of sin that a man carries in his bosom. Peter was not necessarily committing sins at this period, he just went about his normal fishing profession, he just finished and washed his nets, he even gave his ship to Jesus, he assisted Jesus to row the ship into the sea, he listened to all Jesus said, he obeyed The Lords instructions, so we did not see any particular sin he committed here, but when he saw the glory and revelation of The Lord, he saw his inner depraved nature clearly, a sinful bunch and that was where his permanent deliverance came from.
The reason why many people still cover up is because the extent of their rottenness has not been made clear by the revealing beauty of Gods holiness. No man can hide any further, when the torch of Gods divine glory beams upon his sinful state, everything gets finished at that instant.
If the glory of God did not attack your true personality, it is doubtful if you ever saw it. If all Gods glory addressed is your physical need, and never a spiritual heart in which The Lord can dwell, then, go back to God again, what you saw was not Gods glory.
”...so was also James, and John... partners with Simon.”
Do you sometimes wonder how Jesus could recruit great men like Peter, James and John into discipleship that overwhelmed their entire lives, and they literarily surrendered every bit of their lives to Jesus? Do you wonder how Jesus could get such men who died to everything, and they could only live for the glory of God alone? It all happened at this instance. Here, exactly what happened to Peter the deep consuming revelation of Jesus in his spirit was what happened to these two brothers, James and John, the companions of Peter.
That Peter, James and John went so far with God, is because something deep happened to their spirits AT THEIR RECRUITMENTS. They saw JESUS in His glory and fullness. They were not just cajoled or invited to Jesus meetings. They were not brainwashed by plenty sermons, they were not tutored on dos and do nots, they did not follow a regimented church tradition, neither did they follow some doctrines, patterns and methods. NO, a deep revelation of Christ was given unto them, they SAW HIM.
”...Fear not...”
Whenever a man sees the revelation of Jesus, suddenly, the fear of God will overwhelm him. Because of the normal human nature, this fear is both reverential fear and slavish fear combined together. Something in you now sees God and acknowledges Him as the One to be reverenced and worshipped, the Owner of your soul, and you want to surrender your all unto HIM. This is the reverential fear. But coupled with that, something also says, "ha!, I am finished, this great God will deal with me and destroy me". The fear of terrible repercussions because of your evil nature and the evil it has done suddenly comes heavily upon you. So you adorably fear God for who He is, and you also slavishly fear Him for the terror you think He will unleash upon you.
But now, wonderful Jesus says ”fear not...”. Does that mean that we should not fear God? No!!! I must fear God and reverence and adore Him, but I must not be afraid that something terrible will happen unto me. The reverential fear must remain, but the slavish fear must be taken away. Though God is great and high, yet He has respect unto the humble and the contrite hearted person, which is all He requires me to do.
”...they forsook all…”
They forsook ALL??? What will Peter, James and John eat? How will they survive? They forsook...all the ships, all the nets, even all the fishes...? Were they compelled or brainwashed? Is this not sheer fanaticism? Who preached to them about absolute surrender before they surrendered?
When a man truly encounters Jesus, you do not need to persuade him again, he is already fully persuaded, and he knows exactly what to do. Surrendering all to Jesus, is not a big matter for those who have seen His glory, it is a normal life for them. If you have to be pulled and pushed and dragged before you eventually cry out, “I surrender all”, check it very well, you have not SEEN HIM yet.
”...they forsook ALL, and followed HIM.”
You cannot truly follow Him if you have not totally forsaken all. HIM and ALL actually are mutually exclusive, they are pointing to opposite directions. No man can serve these 2 masters together at the same time. It is hypocrisy to think you can sustain a relationship with Jesus while still clinging to your ALL. True discipleship actually begins here forsaking your all and following Him.
HIM and ALL are incompatible. Whatever you have gained from your ALL has to be left behind in order to cling to HIM. Do not think that what your ALL had given you can be imported into the walk with HIM. It is not whether your ALL is good or bad that is the issue, even your beautiful ALL cannot cohabit with HIM, because their destinations and goals are opposed to each other. One is transient, and the other eternal.
If you have NEVER forsaken your ALL, no matter what progress you think you are making in your journey with HIM, you are only deceiving yourself, because the commencement of your journeying with HIM is the end point of your previous ALL.
