...Weekly insights into scriptures by Olumide AyodeleThe Shinning Glory
There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. (1 Corinthians 15:41)
All the things that God created have their own differing glories and beauties. There is a glory of the sun, and there is the glory of the moon. But the two of them, though glorious, beautiful and shinning in their individual strengths, have both different power and effect upon the earth. Stars give light, so does the sun, but their kinds of light is different, their tastes, effects and purposes too are different one from the other. Think of it like this:- there are different kinds of food, there is yam, and there is honey, the two are sweet in the mouth, but the taste and effect of one is completely different from that of the other. You cannot compare the sweetness or effect of one to the other, even though you call the two of them 'sweet'.
There is a glory that is of this world, it is charming, beautiful and attractive to those who admire it, it is a form of glory on its own, whereas, there is another glory of heaven, the glory of Christ, it is also charming, beautiful and attractive to those who have seen it, but the two glories are not the same. At night, when there is total darkness upon all the surface of the earth, a man needs the torch light to give him illumination to be able to navigate his way around his surroundings, he enjoys some comfort because he can now see. But when the light from the sun suddenly beams, it immediately overwhelms and swallows up all the lesser light that came from the torch. The touch light suddenly becomes insignificant and is reduced to nothing because there is a greater, mightier light that has consumed it absolutely. It is not that the torch light reduced in strength or intensity, neither is it that it dimmed out or died out, no, rather, the power of the sun has swallowed up that of the torch, glory has swallowed up glory, and the lesser glory has become nothing. The torch light and the sunlight are both sources of light, but, the effect and power of one is incomparable to the other.
The glory of the world is like that of the torch, many are rushing for its beauties because that is all the light they can see due to the darkness that has covered them. The worldly glories are expressed in tangibles, countables, visibles and touchables and because heavenly glories are not immediately apparent, many are not willing to plunge in to discover the wonders thereof.
The disciples once asked Jesus about the glorious kingdom which He so talked about, they desired when it would come, they thought it was going to be a kingdom that will come and rival with that of the world, they felt it was going to be some physical, visible kingdom that will overshadow that of the world in comparison. Jesus laughed and said 'No, that kingdom is not a physical, tangible kingdom, instead, that kingdom of God is within you', when it comes, it consumes you, it saturates you, it overwhelms you and fills a man with a glory, a beauty beyond the physical. The glory of the world suddenly is being swallowed up by that glory, and the former fades into insignificance...
Before Christ came into the world, the glories of the world have always been there, the light that the world's glory shined had always enslaved those who were bound by it, the light beamed, and that was all the world could see until Christ came. So in my mind, I don't think Christ came to put more brilliance into that worldly glory, so that it can radiate the more, rather He came with a replacement, He came with a greater, higher and better glory that is totally different from that which the world carries. May I say that all those things which the Gentiles seek (the wealth of the world, the fame and accolades of the world) which have also become the pursuits of many blind believers today, ARE NOT part of the glories which Christ brought, they have always been there before Christ came and many unbelievers have had them. How could that be what Christ died for - that will be too cheap a thing!!! What Christ brought has never been, it is not available anywhere else, and no man can ever experience it, or partake in it, who has not accepted Christ in replacement of (not addition to) what he ever had.
Divine glories are heavenly, spiritual and rich, it is about the revelations of the eternal God. No wonder the Bible says things like:
"set your affection on things above, NOT on THINGS on the earth (Colossians 3:2)
"LAY NOT up for yourselves treasures upon earth... But LAY UP FOR YOURSELVES treasures IN HEAVEN... For where your treasure is, THERE will your heart be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)
Those who are still holding on to the fading glory of the world are blind and still enslaved. The glories of the world are the ephemeral, fading type, what was exciting today, suddenly becomes obsolete tomorrow because another exciting thing has replaced it. For you who have seen the glory of Christ, if the world looks at you with disdain, if the world calls you 'confused' to be swallowed up by Christ alone, you will also see them as blind, exalting the fading, useless glories of the world as if it has value.
When a man suddenly beholds the glory of God, he begins to have an understanding that, yes, even though he is in the world, he is definitely NOT of the world, another glory has captivated and saturated him, heavenly glory has consumed the earthly one. It is not that the glory of the world has suddenly ended or stopped to shine, neither is it that the glory of the world has suddenly become dim or has died completely, no, that glory is still as it was in those days when you used to live for it, but presently, there is a bigger, mightier, lasting, incorruptible glory that has consumed you now, the greater glory has suddenly swallowed up the little, lesser one, and it has become non-existent to you.
I pity many believers today who are still blind, they are still carrying the 'touch light' of little worldly glory and are exalting it as if that were some great things. I'm baffled when I see churches exalting magnificent buildings, monetary increase, increase in societal status, goods and gadgets, secular promotions... as if that were the glories that God came to bestow through Christ, God would have been a poor, bankrupt God if those were His best - the things that the devil has been giving in abundance to his own children even from centuries past. If only God could open the eyes of believers that we are NOT of this world, NOT BECAUSE we are a fanatical and an unreasonable junk of addicts who have been brainwashed, but because our eyes have seen a greater and richer glory before which the world has suddenly become infinitesimal and insignificant, something not worth living or dying for.
