And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow. [Matthew 13:3]
“...And He spake …”
What if after God spoke unto me, I do not have the retentive capability to keep His word? What if my soul is full of leaking vessels, and cannot retain His divine word? If no sooner had a revelation come into my life than it fizzles out again because of the activities of the day, will my life ever be a profitable one?
The greatest edifices of the world today are built by laying one stone upon another, and upon another, and upon another. What if the earlier laid stones got kicked out before newer stones came to climb on top? What if no stones found other stones upon which they were to be laid? such buildings will forever be in their foundation stages, it will be an exercise in futility, with so much being done, yet no result is seen, it will be a lifetime of building, struggles and yet no growth will be recorded. it will be an endless labour of ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 3:7).
Is my soul full of pores? Is my life a perforated bunch? Are my eyes, ears and mouth, outlet vessels that constantly leak out precious treasures because I have not decisively disciplined self? Spiritual growth happens because the word of God came unto me, but if the word of God has nowhere to dwell within my soul, then I am worse than he who never received anything.
If two (2) brothers: ‘A’ and ‘B’ started out as Christians. Brother A spends 2 hours daily in secret duties to commune with God in His word to receive grace and divine freshness, while Brother B quietly spends 30 minutes for the same assignment every day. For the purpose of illustrations, if spiritual things were quantifiable, we assume that the ratio of Brother A’s blessings to B’s will be a mathematical 4:1, therefore, one year down the line, it is expected that Brother A will be more spiritual than B. The question then comes, “after a year, who would have grown taller in his spiritual walk with God”?
Well, instincts simply concludes that Brother A is the spiritual giant. But in reality, this is often not so. If Brother B is meticulous enough to keep every detail of grace he receives, if he is careful always to allow God’s word to be built up within his life, and he humbly walks with his God every step of the way and daily builds upon the bricks earlier laid, he would be accepted in heaven’s sight than a Brother A, who seemed to be on fire before the world’s view, but impotent in laying all on the altar. He spends 2 hours before the Lord, but 3 hours before the television. Activities (no matter how religious they may appear) have eroded the divine treasures he got. As his mouth dissipates the spiritual energy poured into him, so does the ear contaminate the glorious sweetness he received from God in the morning. His eyes nonetheless feed on pollutions which he called entertainments. Pitiably, he that was bubbling with God in the morn has suddenly become an outcast in the night, and he goes to bed daily in tears of repentance that seemed to say, “O Lord, I fell again!!!”
"... A sower went ...to sow..."
A sower went to sow…, the sower didn't go to play, he didn't go to watch, to drive, to swim, or to do many other things, he simply went to sow, he simply went to do his work. It is expected of me to live out what I actually profess. It is not enough to be a sower, without going forth to sow joyfully. I must live a life that is in consonance with my message and profession, What my mouth preaches, my life must echo. The message must be heard from my lips, and must as well, be reflected from my life, and the two must agree.
The sower was nick-named as such, because he was always sowing. He wasn't sowing because he was called a sower, rather, he was called a sower because he sowed. It is the life I live that will give men the name I should be called. It is my activity that will spell my title, and it is my daily preoccupation that will announce my appellation.
The bane of present day Christianity (or should I say religion—because Christianity only exalts Christ, Christianity is a life and not a form), is the rise in accolades, titles, appellations, without first, a corresponding rise in duties. It is burglary to cart away the name, without actually performing the assignment that the name suggests. I even believe that the name should never come first, it is the assignment I do that should suggest the name I should be called, NEVER the name first.
Would a man bear the name “Father”, without having got some little children he bore from his loins? Will a man be called a teacher without a form of systematic instructions, in which he is passing on to those under his tutelage? It is criminal to carry the title on the head, to attach accolades to names if the subject the title addresses is obviously omitted in your performance. I will rather be a man without portfolio and perform the tasks the Lord lays in my hand, than be called a Pastor, a Bishop, an Overseer…, and have only the name to show for it, without a corresponding effect upon the lives I am called to lead.
It is performance that announces my name. The name before the performance is like placing the cart before the horse, no job will be done.
"...went forth"
The business of sowing cannot be done while standing still in one place, it demands going forth. It is robbery to be called a sower without actually going forth to sow.
